Cholesterol Value Reporting Units

Serum lipid values are reported as milligrams per deciliter (e.g. 220 mg/dL) or millimole per liter (e.g. 5.20 mmol/L). mmol/L is the SI unit (Systeme International d'Unites) which is in standard international measurement system.

The SI unit considers the numbers of molecules of cholesterol in blood. In US, India and many other countries, the values for serum cholesterol are reported as mg/dL, while Australia, UK and Europe use SI units.

Sometimes the patient gets confused when he (or she) look for lipid cholesterol level values in different units. The following table can be used to convert the values from one system of units to another.

Total serum cholesterol

Convert from
millimole per liter to milligram per deciliter
mmol/L to mg/dL

Conversion factor
multiply by
1/0.02586
= 38.67

to get values in
milligrams per deciliter
mg/dL

Example
5.30 mmol/L
= 5.3 x 38.67
= 205 mg/dL

OR to Convert from
milligram per deciliter to millimole per liter
mg/dL to mmol/L, divide by 38.67
Example:
205 mg/dL = 205/38.67 = 5.3 mmol/L

HDL cholesterol

Convert from
millimole per liter to milligram per deciliter
mmol/L to mg/dL

Conversion factor
multiply by
1/0.02586
= 38.67

to get values in
milligram per deciliter
mg/dL

Example
0.9 mmol/L
= 0.9 x 38.67
= 35 mg/dL

OR to Convert from
milligram per deciliter to millimole per liter
mg/dL to mmol/L, divide by 38.67
Example:
35 mg/dL = 35/38.67 = 0.9 mmol/L

LDL cholesterol

Convert from
millimole per liter to milligram per deciliter
mmol/L to mg/dL

Conversion factor
multiply by
1/0.02586
= 38.67

to get values in
milligrams per deciliter
mg/dL

Example
3.5 mmol/L
= 3.5 x 38.67
= 135 mg/dL

OR to Convert from
milligram per deciliter to millimole per liter
mg/dL to mmol/L, divide by 38.67
Example:
135 mg/dL = 135/38.67 = 3.5 mmol/L

Serum triglycerides

Convert from
millimole per liter to milligram per deciliter
mmol/L to mg/dL

Conversion factor
multiply by
1/0.01129
= 88.57

to get values in
milligrams per deciliter
mg/dL

Example
1.90 mmol/L
= 1.9 x 88.57
= 168 mg/dL

OR to Convert from
milligram per deciliter to millimole per liter
mg/dL to mmol/L, divide by 88.57
Example:
168 mg/dL = 168/88.57 = 1.9 mmol/L
