Coriander, also known as cilantro is the seed of a small plant. The coriander seed is produced in India, Russia, South America, North Africa, and Holland. The seeds and powder are light yellowish green in color with a mild fragrance.
Coriander seed oil is a strong antibacterial. The seed is an appetizer and a stimulatant to the stomach and intestines. In Asia the herb and its oil are used against piles, hemorrhoids, headache, swellings, conjunctivitis, rheumatism, mouth ulcers, and a poultice for boils.
Whole dried coriander seeds and ground coriander powder are used in several vegetable curry dishes, rice biryani, coriander chutney, etc. Whole coriander seeds are used in snacks and recipes. The coriander leaves are always used fresh. They are sprinkled like parsley on cooked dishes, in salads, sauces, soups, and vegetable curries for flavor.
